Sneak Peak: A look inside...
Full Poem Preview: Remembering Granny's Amber Trophy
(In Section IV: Matriarchs: Granny & Nana)

Her frail wrinkly hand, made stiff and weary
from fifty-eight years of scrubbing linoleum and hardwood floors,
and lifting pans from hot ovens,
fumbled about her bare neck
as memories surfaced.
Since the age of twelve,
she toiled for decades in household servitude
armed with grandiose dreams.
But, Mary-Elizabeth was always taught by mama that,
"such finery was not meant for colored folks,"
so when her kind employer blessed her with
the gift of amber,
she promised to cherish
and keep it always,
a trophy for her grueling labor.
That diamond shaped honey-colored
amber stone with black specks,
adorned with its polished golden beads,
found a permanent home securely
fastened around her neck.
But now, her tired fingers felt its absence.
Where did it go?
She panics for it each day.
And each day she is reminded that
it is safely tucked away by her daughter
for fear of theft from nurses
and other patients.
Once she remembers,
her hundred year old delicate body sinks back with relief
into a sort of peacefulness,
only to be interrupted in alarm,
when she suddenly discovers
the amber necklace
missing
once again.
